"Cut To The Feeling" by Carly Rae Jepsen - Song Review

The pop goddess rises yet again to save the genre.

We already know how criminally underrated Carly Rae Jepsen’s third studio album E•MO•TION is. We know it was overlooked by the GRAMMYs and the general public – that could have been because the artist decided to release the album’s worst track as its lead single. Either way, Jepsen has been churning out pop gems since her meteoric rise to fame in 2012. Her previous album effort was perfection from beginning to end, wrapped in 80s-electro greatness. Today, she surprised released an album leftover and sent her fan base into an immediate frenzy.

“Cut To The Feeling”, recorded during the E•MO•TION sessions, is featured on the soundtrack to upcoming animated film Leap!, where the pop artist voices a character who helps an orphan reach her ballerina dreams. How cute. Though the song missed an opportunity to be included on Jepsen’s third album, and the extended play follow up of B-sides, it is clear the euphoric pop track was destined to be shared with the world. With an uplifting message of unbounded romance, it’s a breezy, summer-ready jam.

Carried to soaring heights by Jepsen’s joyous vocal performance and a combination of supporting 80s-inspired synths and a knockout chorus, “Cut To The Feeling” will certainly please die-hard fans and the radio-obsessed audience. With its theatrical-like production and feel-good vibe, its inclusion on a film soundtrack does make perfect sense and will hopefully aid in broadening the song’s reach. The enchanting nature of the release works wonders, innocent like the young child target audience of the accompanying film.

As a majority of her previous full length album did, the soundtrack contribution takes a certain emotion and amps it up to max potential. She might be coming off strong and assertive, but the charm in her delivery allows Jepsen to seem playful, not demanding. “I wanna play where you play with the angel, I wanna wake up with you all in tangles, oh, I wanna cut to the feeling, oh yeah,” she gorgeously belts on the infectious and radio-ready chorus, just another homerun in her pop arsenal.

Fans of Jepsen never fail to mention the artist’s uncanny ability to write pop gold. “Cut To The Feeling” is no different. Jepsen is able to perfectly channel the overwhelming emotion that courses through one’s veins when they lock eyes with a potential romantic companion. The production does help boost those senses, but when it comes down to it, the heavy lifting is done by the artist’s pleasantly charged performance and willingness to let loose.

The pop-loving public could be receiving E•MO•TION leftovers for years and years. Jepsen admitted nearly 250 songs were recorded for her third album era. “Cut To The Feeling” is solid proof that no Jepsen creation is subpar and only choosing a small percentage of songs for the final tracklist might have been a more daunting task that one initially imagined. She’s started work on a follow-up fourth album, though no one would mind waiting a while longer to blow dust off older gems.
