All body types are beautiful and knowing our body type is important as we find out our areas of concern or areas that we want to hide and features that we want to enhance. It influences our dressing style and workout regime as well. Everyone has their own view of the perfect body type and this post will discuss how to measure your body and the various body types based on those measurements.
Measurement:
Correctly measuring the body is the most important step in determining your body type. Take a measuring tape along with a piece of paper and a pen. Wear clothes that are tight fitting for this purpose like legging and a tank top so that they don’t affect the measurements. Stand tall and straight for all measurements.
Bust: Wrap the measuring tape around the widest area of the bust while keeping your back straight. Keep the tape taut and note the measurement.
Waist: Measure the narrowest area of the waist. This is usually just below the ribcage. Again, keep the tape smooth and taut. Note the measurement.
Hips: Measure the hips by finding the widest part of your hips. This is generally just at the crotch. Note down the measurement.
Now that you have all measurements, simply compare the three numbers to each other to determine your body type. Remember, it is not important that your waist is not 26. Do not compare yourself to others. It is just a clichéd number.
Body Types
There are five major body types that can be determined based on the above measurements.
1. Pear or Triangle Type:
If your hips are the widest part of your body, you have the pear shape or the triangle shape. Many celebrities have this body type such as Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez and Marilyn Monroe. For styling your body, use clothes that accentuate the waist. This creates a balance in the frame of your body.
2. Inverted Triangle Type:
This shape occurs when the bust is the widest part of your body. Wide shoulders also feature it. It is considered to be a sporty body type characterized by muscular shoulders and narrow waists. Celebrities like Renee Zellweger and Naomi Campbell have this body type. They usually stand at a diagonal towards the camera to accentuate their feminine figure and to make their shoulders appear narrower.
3. Straight Type:
This type of body shape typically occurs when all three measurements are more or less the same and give the appearance of a straight structure. A person with this body type does not have many curves. Supermodel Kate Moss has this body type. Generally people with this body type cinch their waists to create the illusion of curves.
4. Apple Type:
Wide hips, bust and waist characterize this body type. People with such body types tend to wear flowing outfits that make the waist line less noticeable. They tend to accentuate other features of their body such as legs. Catherine Zeta Jones has this body type.
5. Hourglass Type:
This body type is the most sought after by most women. A wide bust and hips as well as thin waist characterize the hourglass type. Sofia Vergara is known for rocking this body type as she wears outfits that enhance the curves of her body. She often wears dresses that have a mermaid cut – they accentuate the bust and hips as well as cinch the waist.
