Song Review: Hailee Steinfeld Contemplates No More "I Love You's" on Upbeat Self-Care Anthem

Following breakout chart hits such as "Love Myself" and "Starving", peaking at #30 and #12 respectively, Academy Award-nominated actress Hailee Steinfeld has showcased impressive musical chops as a growing fan base patiently awaits a proper debut album outing, a follow up to extended play Haiz in 2015.

Details on that official debut album are still scarce -- part one of a new two-part project is expected on May 1 though -- but Steinfeld tides her audience over with her second single release of 2020. Following "Wrong Direction", the artist pays homage to Annie Lennox on latest "I Love You's", an upbeat ode to self-care and self-reflection in the midst of a recent break up.

Listeners should immediately recognize the intro "doo-bee-doo" notes, a sample of the Eurythmics lead singer's solo hit "No More I Love You's", which Nicki Minaj more recently took inspiration from for her breakout hit "Your Love". For Steinfeld however, she alters the lyrics to address the necessity to heal before jumping back into another relationship.

"I feel my conscience is callin', now there's no fear, no more runnin', I don't want words that mean nothin'," she boasts on a standout bridge.

Self-care is often neglected, a reason why most rebound relationships end in similar negative fashion. "I Love You's" emphasizes the importance to just step back and take a deep breath. Yes, Steinfeld began her recovery process jaded, blaming the world for her problems, until she realized all she needed was time. Time to focus on herself, time to regain her confidence, time to mend the broken heart.

Inspired by real-life events -- Steinfeld admits to purposefully staying single for a year -- the messages of hope and healing elevate "I Love You's" to something more than just another 80s-inspired pop track. There's now assurance and conviction in Steinfeld's vocals. The decision to incorporate cheery production, as opposed to a ballad structure, further highlights the artist's intent to eventually get back up from her current low place.
